How does the bilingual education work?

It is becoming more and more important to have fluency in English in a globalized world. It is exactly during the first years of life that the child may become completely bilingual.
Through the most modern constructivist resources, and through projects with specific themes, children are exposed to the English language all day long, thus being able to communicate in both English and Portuguese.
On the other hand, the teachers, graduated in education, and fully proficient in the language, talk to the children only in English.
If the child stays in this immersion programme for at least 5 years, it will acquire fluency and a good pronunciation of the English language.
Moreover, the child (from 3 years on) has Portuguese classes everyday with a teacher specialized in literacy. The length of the Portuguese classes depends on the age group:
C3 - 30 min.
C4 - 45 min
C5 - 1 hour
C6 - 2h 30min
In our school, literacy is done in Portuguese as we believe it is fundamental for the child to learn the abc in his/her native language.
Brazilian and foreign students who wish to be literate in the English language are sent to specialized schools when they are 5 years old. |
